My journey to veganism & beer
Going vegan was a gradual process that started with a growing awareness of animal cruelty and environmental issues.
I started by cutting meat from my diet and eventually eliminated all animal products, including dairy and eggs.
At first, I was worried that I would have to give up some of my favourite foods and drinks, including beer.
However, after doing some research, I was relieved to find out that there are plenty of vegan beer options available.
I learned that many beers contain animal products such as gelatin, isinglass (a fish-derived fining agent), and lactose, used to clarify or flavour the beer.
But I also discovered that some breweries cater specifically to vegans and that some mainstream beer brands have started labelling their vegan-friendly products.
One of the best parts of my journey has been exploring new vegan beer options and supporting breweries that share my values.
I’ve also discovered that beer and veganism have much in common regarding sustainability and reducing our environmental footprint.
Eventually, going vegan has been a positive and fulfilling experience for me. I’m grateful to still enjoy a cold, refreshing beer while staying true to my values!

What makes beer non-vegan?
Like many other food and drink products, beer can contain animal-derived ingredients that make it non-vegan.
Some common animal products used in beer production include gelatin, derived from animal bones and connective tissue and used as a clarifying agent, and isinglass, which comes from fish bladders and is used to remove yeast and other solids from the beer.
Other non-vegan ingredients found in beer can include lactose, honey, and shellfish-derived flavourings.
In addition, some breweries may use animal products in their filtration systems, which can render the beer non-vegan.
As a vegan, it’s important to be aware of these ingredients and to research before choosing a beer to ensure that it aligns with your values.
Luckily, many vegan-friendly beers are available on the market. Many breweries are starting to label their vegan products to make it easier for consumers to identify them.
Stay with me to let you know how to identify vegan-friendly beers and some of the best beer brands in the following of this article.
How to identify vegan beers?
One of the easiest ways to identify vegan beers is to look for labels on the bottle or can.
Many breweries now include vegan symbols or labels to indicate they are free of animal products. You can also look for phrases like “suitable for vegans” or “vegan-friendly” on the label.
Suppose the beer doesn’t have a vegan label or symbol. In that case, it’s important to do some research to determine whether or not it contains animal products.
You can check the brewery’s website or contact them directly to ask about their brewing process and ingredients.
Another helpful resource is the Barnivore website, which maintains a database of vegan and non-vegan beers and provides information on their ingredients and brewing methods.
When in doubt, it’s always a good idea to stick to beers made with simple, natural ingredients, as these are more likely to be vegan.
Beers unfiltered or brewed without animal-derived finings are also more likely to be vegan.
By being mindful of the ingredients in beer and doing some research, you can confidently choose vegan beers that align with your values and enjoy a tasty, cruelty-free brew.
