Anti-Racism in Animal Advocacy Movement
Opening Your Eyes: Exposing the Effects of Speciesism
Today, I want to look into a topic that’s often overlooked but should be considered as the top priority in our lives without some people realizing it. We all love animals, don’t we? Don’t you see your adorable little fluffy pet as your child and a bundle of joy? Have you ever looked into their eyes?
When they misbehave and you rebuke them, do you know what they feel? I can tell they understand and comprehend. When you’re about to take them out for a walk or give them a bath, they jump up and down out of excitement and exhilaration. What emotions do they convey? I see happiness.
Also, when you leave them alone at home, they desperately long for you, making those adorable noises. Have you ever noticed how animals act just like humans when they interact with their friends at the park? They understand and feel everything; it’s just that their way of communicating and expressing themselves is a little different because they belong to a different species and that’s it!
In this article you will read:
Speciesism : Animal Racism Definition
We usually recognize racism among humans, as we disapprove of any differentiation between white, black, or any other form of skin, and request for a society in which each person regardless of their race, religion, orientation, and culture can live equally as others. Furthermore, we expect governments to establish regulations for ensuring our basic rights so that we can live peacefully together, while we ignore the most fundamental rights of animals. So, if we are opposed to oppression and suffering, why it’s happening every day on farms and industries, and we’ve remained silent?
Now, I aim to discuss the definition of animal racism and speciesism. Maybe this is the first time you have heard these terms, so let me look a little deeper into them. Racial discrimination and speciesism speak of unfair and unjust discrimination to individuals based on their race or species. It’s an attitude that makes people regard a certain race or species as unworthy of their concern. In other words, it’s a form of discrimination based on certain things that we attribute to animals. As a vegan who truly cares about animal rights, this issue is immensely important to me.
I’m confident that by reading this article precisely, you will better understand why animal rights and racism in animal advocacy are worthy of so much attention. Please continue reading till the end as I would like to invite you to watch this inspiring short film called “That Also Breaths,” which shows the importance of animals, their need for our empathy, and the shift of our attitudes towards animals. It’s truly a wake-up call for you to look again at your plate.
Indifference towards animal cruelty and suffering
From all around the world people have lovely adorable pets, including yourself, like dogs, cats, and so on. But the harsh reality is that some animal lovers who are in favor of animal rights remain indifferent towards slaughter, suffering, and torture done to other animals. Ignoring the fact that millions of animals are grown up on industrial farms and live in packed places.
These animals live a life of pain and stress. Moreover, they put the meat of the same creature on their dinner plate without ever considering that the steak they eat was once a living being, who was playing freely in the open fields with its mother, but unfortunately, turned into a cow and faced heart-rending circumstances!
Now, I wish to provide you with more information about how humans oppress all species, but at first, I’ll discuss a little about pets.
What is a pet or domesticated animal?
These are animals that humans have managed to domesticate and separate them from their natural environment, making them a part of the urban areas. In other terms, dogs, cats, monkeys, hamsters, and birds, basically, any animal that humans can control—become our cute domesticated animals that humans behave with as they please.
An Interest in pets and indifference to other species
Being indifferent to the brutal actions that are happening to animals is an unfortunate problem that persists in our society. As I mentioned earlier, racism in animal advocacy is when people cherish their pets while ignoring the brutality against other animals or species. This shows that there is no concern for the pain that animals go through. It doesn’t matter if it’s about the terrible actions of farming factories, animal experimentation, or their illegal trade, as all of these prove the weight that animals carry because of our indifference. It’s upsetting to see this since many people are unaware of the animal’s suffering or choose to remain indifferent. However, animal racism and the pain they endure are wide open in front of our eyes.
Pet Industry
The pet industry has turned into one of the most profitable businesses in the last decades, as more people are choosing to adopt pets in order to use them as tools for receiving affection or filling up their loneliness. But, when it comes to this industry exploiting animals only for more profit, it’s very important for us to stand up for ethical matters.
What is truly happening in this filthy industry in terms of exploitation and production from animals, are things like forced breeding, putting them in captivity, and oppressing them. What you’re only seeing is only cute little animals who are smiling in storefronts, but you’re unaware of behind-the-scene events, and the hardship they’re going through every day. Just imagine having to live in poor and dirty conditions, deprived of everything that is naturally your right. Shouldn’t all these horrifying events strike you to ask serious questions about the animal’s welfare and the racism against them?
What can be done to improve these awful conditions?
First and foremost, instead of buying animals from the profiteers, you’d better adopt animals from shelters because they provide a safe environment for animals who are in need and ensure that pets are in good hands. By doing that and adopting from a reliable shelter, not only you are giving a loving home to these innocent animals, but also you’re doing a great help to the environment.
So, please stop supporting businesses that use unethical actions against animals, with putting an end to the demand for this industry. What must consider is raising your awareness and encouraging others to support us. Therefore, by sharing our article and the short film we provided we can inspire a larger audience. Now, I want to walk you through the subject of animal racism, speciesism, and cruel actions done to them, such as artificial insemination, torture, experimentation, and keeping them in low-grade conditions. All with the intention of earning more money, which is definitely not worth it, so please do not stay silent and do something for them.
The Use animals as tools in the entertainment industry and business
Business and entertainment are the two most attention-grabbing and money-making activities in our modern world, and sadly, it’s typical of such industries to use animals as tools for amusement, and the use of animals as means of amusement can vary, such as in circuses, zoos, dolphinariums, aquariums, horse riding, and bullfighting. But, it’s absolutely wrong to support these industries and their exploit of animals only for shows and profit.
One of the reasons that make people not support the use of animals in the entertainment industry is that the animals have been in human captivity for a long time, as this has resulted in our indifference towards animals and overlooking the fact that they are alive, they have feelings and breath as well as us. Don’t you agree that your pet is as alive as yourself and feels the same feelings as you do?
So, please stop attending these displays and bring in revenue for their unethical businesses.
Racism in animal advocacy is like this, imagine you’re being kept in unbelievable conditions and lose your natural abilities, having no independence or freedom compared to your other counterparts, and many choose to remain silent about it. How do you feel? The same thing happens to animals every day. They are trained to please humans and perform in shows, controlled by conditioning and training mechanisms, which involve using pain and pleasure leverage and other painful methods to regulate these animals. So, the lives of these animals in the industry become controlled, and only by picturing it for ourselves we can deeply sense what it’s like to be go through such conditions.
Sacrificing animals in rituals
Unfortunately, the act of sacrificing animals in ritualistic and religious ceremonies is another horrifying subject, as in some cultures, and religions, animals are sacrificed in these ceremonies in an attempt to show appreciation and goodwill to their god. But these acts are nothing but ancient beliefs that involve closing the eyes to the rights of animals and putting them in distress and misery.
From my view as an animal rights advocate and a vegan, taking advantage of animals in the entertainment industry and their sacrifice in religious ceremonies represents an indifference to animal rights and unnecessary slaughter. Please do not hold back and raise your voice to this suffering for animals, by giving them what’s naturally their right.
Given the mentioned facts, the importance of supporting animal rights, and raising our voice against animal racism and speciesism, through forbidding the use of animals as tools in the entertainment industry and rituals, is evident more than ever. Instead of visiting places where animals are held captive and have lost their natural lives, we should wisely choose our entertainment options, and respect the position of animals in our world as they are the same living creatures as us.
There are still numerous opportunities of entertainment without using animals as tools. For example, public parks or gardens, outdoor sports, concerts, and artistic activities, are enjoyable activities with no harm to any species. In this case, you can make the most out of your leisure time while respecting the rights of animals.
Not ignoring the inhuman treatment and slaughter of farm animals
The harsh reality that has really been weighing on my heart is when I see the inhuman treatment and slaughter of farm animals. The reason why we are still tackling these horrible problems is the presence of subjects like animal racism, racism in animal advocacy, and indifference to animals. Since it’s not clear for us to see what’s actually happening in slaughterhouses, such issues have been overlooked and ignored by many people in our society.
Countless animals meet their end in such places, in ways that are far from humanity. If you agree that your pet breathes, senses pleasure and pain just like yourself, do not stay silent. Because we have the power to make a difference, by not choosing to remain indifferent and ignorant towards these brutalities, and increasing everyone’s awareness by sharing these ideas through every possible media. In the following paragraphs, I will talk more about the torture of animal farms and the terrible experiments that are being done on them.
Continual pregnancy
When it comes to continual pregnancy in animals in order to gain more profit, we really have to pay close attention to what’s really happening. Because it’s a serious issue that certainly requires our concern and action. Let’s dive a little deeper into this topic.
First of all, it’s impossible to deny the existence of those animal breeding facilities. They have basically centered their attention on the achievement of higher profits, through manipulating and altering animal traits and engaging in activities that are far from ethical. From artificial insemination (the act of placing specially prepared sperm in the uterus of a female cow) to subjecting animals to unimaginable torture and captivity. You go on with being ignorant can’t to the suffering and injustice caused to these innocent creatures.
Besides repeated pregnancy, there are more inhuman exploitations performed on them. An example of this is injecting special hormones into them to maximize and stimulate their milk production. This vicious cycle that contains continuous impregnation, separating them from their calves, and putting large pressure on their bodies to produce more milk, will cause immense emotional suffering. Moreover, genetic modification is another one of their inhuman exploitation, which is done for many reasons like increasing milk production, shortening the pregnancy period, and many other absorbed reasons. It’s a sad reality that these sensitive beings experience, all in the name of meeting people’s greedy demand for dairy products.
Does Vegetarian Mean Dairy Free?
Torture and abuse of cows in the livestock and dairy industry
In 2022, the number of cows slaughtered in the livestock industry was about 34.3 million, according to Statista.com, which frankly weighed heavy on my heart to see the statistics rising each year without anyone speaking up about it. Picture this: cows, pigs, chickens, and other farm animals living in small spaces, deprived of their natural rights and treated like a product. Seriously, have you ever considered where the bacon or the burgers you eat arrogantly come from? What painful process have these innocent cows and calves gone through to turn into your dinner?
My friends, these cows and calves bear unimaginable suffering in this industry, and no one takes no notice. It’s essential for you not close your eyes to their problems, as they are frequently being exposed to many indescribable procedures like forcing continual pregnancy and injecting hormones to produce more milk without any regard for their well-being. This is something that cannot be ignored.
The natural lifespan of cows is estimated to be 15-20 years, but the dairy industry narrows their lifespan down to five years, according to Thehumaneleague.org. Due to all the injected hormones with their damaging effects on their health. Also, taking excessive amounts of milk from them in short periods will weaken their bodies and put them in constant pain.
Abduction of Their Calves in the Dairy Industry
One of the most tragic aspects of the dairy industry is the act of separating calves from their mothers, they are taken shortly after their birth, creating so much grief and emotional damage for both the mother and the calf. As I mentioned earlier, animals possess that certain part of the brain responsible for emotions and feelings just like we do. As a result, the maternal instincts and love that cows have are no different from our own.
There is indeed an emotional bond between a mother cow and her calf. By separating them, we are not only causing unnecessary suffering and trauma for cows, but also we are being hugely indifferent towards them which makes you question your sense of humanity. So, I humbly ask all of you to stop remaining indifferent to the abduction of calves from their mothers, given that you can imagine the same event happening to yourself and sense all the grief and sorrow they experience. All things considered, you should not only avoid animal products in your diet but stand up against all mistreatment and torture.

Mistreatment of Male Chicks
In the egg industry, male chicks are considered non-practical in economic matters and are often disposed of soon after hatching. This industry doesn’t care if they are suffocated, ground up, or left to die, these innocent animals will face a tragic and avoidable end. As a human you who can relate to others and understands the pain in general, you must stand against the countless killing of male chicks. They experience pain, suffering, and all other emotion when their life is cut short, just like we do. Sadly, in the United States, around 260 million male chicks are killed each year, in other words, 30,000 freshly hatched chicks are being killed every hour, according to animalequality.org.
The issue that strikes my nerve is the cruel and heart-breaking methods used to kill male chicks, such as gassing, suffocation, and electrocution. The industry’s reason for all these horrifying actions is the fact that male chicks can’t lay eggs and are not the same breed of chicken that is used for meat.
Do you find any rationality and humanity in this industry? You must not remain quiet, by supporting and promoting alternatives such as plant-based eggs and educating everyone about these harsh realities, we can reduce the demand for eggs and ultimately put an end to the unnecessary suffering of these chicks.
Experiments and testing on animals
Another unethical treatment of animals is the act of experiments and tests on them. It’s really tragic to see living creatures who are conscious and alive have to endure agonizing procedures only to satisfy human needs. Our furry friends don’t deserve such practices and you know it deep down in your heart.
Monkeys, rabbits, cats, and other animals who are subjects of trial and error in experimentation deserve better than being exposed to blindness, mutilation, torture, and imprisonment all in the name of scientific research and development of society.
We as vegans, are doing our best to live a concerned lifestyle, by showing kindness to all living beings. You consider your little pet as your child, so we want you to not stay indifferent to animal testing and experimentation and do something about it. It’s high time we spoke up and demand alternative methods that don’t involve animal testing, and eliminate this animal racism in our attitudes. Trust me, there are plenty of effective alternatives out there, which doesn’t involve the exploitation and discrimination of animals. I quote a beautiful explanation in the words of Mahatma Gandhi:
“The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”
Fashion, cosmetics, labs (Genetically modified production and animal experimentation.)
As I talked about experiments and testing on animals in the previous paragraph, now, I intend to discuss in what ways these cruel experiments are conducted. The three major areas are fashion and cosmetic industries, as the mentioned industries exploit and utilize animals for various purposes, such as testing new products on animals in an effort to observe the reaction of their skin to the products.
First things first, we can’t neglect the hunting of magnificent animals like deer, lions, beavers, foxes, and many more, just to make fashionable items of clothing out of their skins. Worst of all, they rip off their skins and feathers while they are still alive with no regard for anything. How can you remain indifferent? Considering that you have a loving pet of your own. Our furry friends are worthy of a better destiny than being treated as tools for beauty and testing, only for the sake of profit. We can’t just stand by and be indifferent to that, can we?
And let me mention the labs that engage in experimentations aiming to produce genetically modified animals, and subject them to different tests. For instance, they are deliberately harmed in order to be exposed to new drugs and scientists then analyze the results, or they use surgeries to remove animals’ tissues to get results for their new products. After all these sufferings and unethical procedures, they are killed.
My friends, we have enough capabilities to make a difference and change the situation for these valued creatures, by not supporting organizations that take advantage of our love for our cute furry friends that hope to sell different products to us. We are being abused with the emotion we have towards our pets only to exploit them. Right now there is more need than ever for you to speak up and show that you won’t tolerate it.

Likewise, you should make every possible effort to not remain indifferent to any race of animals or species going through them, given that these are values of all humans and don’t change towards other species. Racism in animal advocacy must be deleted from all people’s minds since it has resulted in all the current disasters.
So, please raise our voices with us, for any animal experiencing abuse and torture, as they all deserve to be treated with humanity and respect, like every one of us does. You should all feel a sense of responsibility and empathy down in your heart towards them no matter what kind of animal is subjected to mistreatment, whether it’s sheep, cows, dogs, cats, or any other creatures that breathe.
